New Horizon School
The New Horizon School is a purpose – built establishment in Cantonment catering for 112 persons with Intellectual Disabilities and their families. The school starts some 41 years ago on the 10th of January, 1972 with 3 students by a mother who has a daughter with a disability and supported by friends from American Women Association and two mothers. The school started on the veranda of the mother and moved to a church when the number grew and finally built its own premises in the present location with funds realized from fundraising activities. The school is managed by an executive director assisted by a Principal and controlled by a board of Trustees. It is legally registered with the Ghana Education Service and has been established as a voluntary non-profit making charitable institution and also as a non-governmental organization. (NGO).
Our mission is to develop each child’s potential to the fullest so that he or she can lead a productive and satisfying life in our society.
THE SCHOOL HAS TWO DISTINCT PART
The school provides Basic Day School Education for children and a Vocational Training and Employment for adults who have Intellectual Disabilities.
- The Academic section provides basic education on an individualized basis for children aged between 4 to 17 years.
- The sheltered workshop section gives training and employment in vocational daily and living skills to those who are relatively older.
OUR SUPPORT NEEDS
The school holds pupils in the Education Section and Sheltered workshops. An intake to this level will require more teachers, crafts instructors, physiotherapist and a speech therapist. The school however cannot afford such an increase in staff due to lack of funds.
Many of the children come from poor homes or single parenthood and cannot bear the burden of increased fees. Anytime the fees are raised some children drop out of school. Yet these and many more of such children will need the special education and vocational training offered by the school.
It is truly heart breaking to have to deny a Child with Special Needs a place at our school. Pupils who attend our school have a safe and a loving environment to go, a place where they are understood rather than criticized, a place where they can feel happy, fulfilled and importance and a place where they can get an education and fulfill their potential as members of the human race. Their parents, siblings and friends can gather together in solidarity to educate themselves and Ghanaian society about this peculiar human condition. We offer siblings support systems as well as education and counseling for family members dealing with stress, potential broken homes or simply an inability to cope with situations.
At NHSS we help your children develop the six success attributes that were found to really matter;
SELF-AWARENESS, PROACTIVITY, PERSEVERANCE, GOAL SETTING, USING SUPPORT SYSTEMS, AND EMOTIONAL COPING STRATEGIES.
