Inclusion International Contributes to the Beit Issie Shapiro’s 6th International Conference on Disabilities: Unity & Diversity in Action
Tel Aviv, Israel
The conference was a unique opportunity for Inclusion International and our member organization in Israel (AKIM) to contribute to discussions with academic, medical and community professionals, researchers, policy makers, service providers, people with disabilities, and family members from around the world. II Executive Director, Connie Laurin-Bowie; Officer, Vanessa Dos Santos and Past President, Diane Richler presented on a range of human rights priority issues for people with intellectual disabilities (inclusive education; self-advocacy and the right to live and be included in the community). The conference took place at an important time in Israel where there is a positive shift in the language of human rights, strengthened by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The Government of Israel, working with community partners, including AKIM has committed to moving 700 people with intellectual disabilities out of large residential institutions.
While in Tel Aviv, Inclusion International representatives met with AKIM and other disability and human rights groups to offer support to the changes underway and to identified opportunities for shared learning. Read more about AKIM and others leading change in Israel in our next newsletter…
