II Council member, Quincy Mwiya, and II President, Klaus Lachwitz, participated in the recent governing body meeting of the International Disability Alliance. In addition to addressing internal matters, the meeting, held in Geneva January 27 – 29, 2013, discussed key issues like the post-2015 development framework, the UN Safeguards Review, the upcoming High Level Meeting on Disability and Development and IDA’s capacity building efforts. Quincy and Klaus raised the need to include people with intellectual disabilities and their families in these efforts and ensure that these efforts are accessible to people with intellectual disabilities and their families. Quincy reminded participants that accessibility also means providing materials in plain language, having people speak slowly and clearly and ensuring that the meetings provide sufficient breaks as needed. Klaus shared information about the launch of II’s global report on living and being included in the community and the upcoming campaign on decision-making.
