As part of Inclusion International’s role of in providing a global voice for its members, 2015 will mark a significant effort to collect and synthesize the contributions of our members to two key international statements. At its recent September meeting in Geneva, the Committee of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities established two working groups to draft General Comments on Article 19 (living and being included in the community) and Article 24 (education).
It is anticipated the working groups and the process for submitting to the GCs will be announced at the next session of the Committee (March 25 – April 17, 2015). Inclusion International representatives will be at the meeting and engaging with working group members. Inclusion International is committed to establishing a dialogue with our members and ensuring this voice is heard by the Committee.
General Comments are important because they are used to interpret articles in the CRPD and provide principled statements that shape and influence government action. The voice of II and its members are critical in making sure the General Comments are progressive and reflective of the issues facing people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Additionally, On April 15, 2015, the Committee will also host a general day of discussion on education. Inclusion International representatives will be participating in this discussion.
