The event was hosted by our member in Mexico CONFE, in collaboration with Plena Inclusion, RIADIS, IMSS and Inclusion International on 20-21 September 2018 in Mexico city.
590 participants came together to address topics that are of interest for persons with disabilities and their families, such as the role and impact of siblings, grandmothers and support groups; the current situation on the inclusion of persons with disability according to the Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda; and innovation topics on intellectual disability addressing the issues of the ageing of persons with disability and the double discrimination of women with intellectual disability.
This national event acknowledged the work that the families of persons with disabilities carry out day after day, providing a platform for personal and collective reflection about achievements and challenges for the inclusion of persons with intellectual disability at a national and international level.
Sue Swenson, President of Inclusion International spoke about Strong Families Building the Future. She stated that the involvement of families and the work they do through their organisations have transformed the limiting narratives that make that make the inclusion of disabled people impossible.
Participating members of Inclusion International came together to start some discussions on developing a Families leadership initiative and how Inclusion International can suppor the work of their members in this area.
