Inclusive Employment for persons with disabilities is an issue of utmost importance in the European Union as the rate of unemployment of persons with disabilities in the European Union is almost twice that of the General population. The European Disability Forum (EDF), therefore, with the support of the European Commission held a Conference in Malta on Februar 18, 2017: Inclusive Workplaces – Employment of Persons with Disabilities in the Labor Market.

Klaus Lachwitz, Inclusion International’s  President was invited to deliver the Opening Speech  about The Right to Inclusive Employment and the CRPD. He described some of the main reasons for the high unemployment rate of persons with intellectual, psychosocial and multiple disabilities. He highlighted the inaccessibility of many workplaces and the tendency to send persons with intellectual disabilities to sheltered workshops and segregating settings for work.
