Growing self-advocacy in Asia-Pacific

From 11 to 17 October 2018 three self-advocates and two support staff of Beijing Rong Ai Rong Le Family Support Center for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities(“RARL”) from China went to Malaysia for a study visit on self-advocacy and supported employment .

The team from Beijing visited Inclusion International member in Malaysia United Voice (UV) and Enabling Academy (EA) . UV is the self-advocacy orgnization charied by persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Kuala Lumpur, and EA is a supported employment project sponsored by a company in Malaysia focusing on transition programs for persons with Autism. Beijing visiting team also made presentations at the UV’s key monthly meeting and Disability Equality Training they did for Malaysia Airlines.

Self-advocates from Beijing were inspired by UV’s advocacy practices and will prepare to make their own plan following what they have learned from this visit. They have already shared their feelings and feedback through the Chinese social media and will also give the sharing sessions to the self-advocates group members faciliated by RARL in November.
