Self-advocates tell the UN we want institutions closed

The UN CRPD committee are a group of experts writing guidelines for countries on how to close institutions and make sure everyone can live in the community. The guidelines will be published next year.

The guidelines will be a very important advocacy tool to support people to live in the community, but unfortunately the UN CRPD Committee consultation process was not accessible.

To make sure the voices of self-advocates are part of the CRPD Committee’s guidelines, Inclusion International worked with our network to hear from people with an intellectual disability.

Our members have created a global report about their experiences, ideas and expectations about closing institutions and living in the community.

On December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we will co-host an event with Inclusion Europe to launch our global report.

Join our webinar to:

  • Hear what people with intellectual disabilities around the world have shared in the report
  • Learn how you can feed into the CRPD Committee guidelines on closing institutions and living in the community.
