Following Inclusion International’s nomination, II Council member and self-advocate Mia Farah was selected to speak at the opening of the Conference of States Parties (COSP) on Tuesday, June 13th. Mia’s speech followed opening remarks by the President of the Conference, the Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In her prestigious role on the opening panel for COSP, Mia not only represented persons with disabilities and their respective organizations, but was chosen to represent all civil society organizations at the Conference – a significant achievement for our movement.
Mia shared her individual experience as a person with a disability and also carried forward civil society’s shared vision for full inclusion and participation for persons with disabilities. “Self-advocacy is important to me. I know my rights and no one knows my life better than me,” stated Mia in her address to COSP.
The 10th session of the COSP took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 13- 15 June, under the theme “The Second Decade of the CRPD: Inclusion and full participation of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in the implementation of the Convention.”
