On International Siblings Day, we celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters.

This year, our theme is Seen, Heard, Valued. We are looking at how siblings with and without intellectual disabilities support each other to be included.

Standing by my sibling means being their voice when needed, but also making sure their own voice is heard.

A Movement Built by Families

Families are an important part of Inclusion International.

Over 70 years ago, families wanted a better life for their relatives with intellectual disabilities. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends came together. They started the groups that make up our network today.

Now, people with intellectual disabilities and their families lead our work together as equal partners.

Having a brother with a disability has shaped who I am… Without him, I may have missed the opportunity to grow into a more compassionate, sensitive, and grounded human being.

What It Means to Stand by a Sibling

Across this week, siblings from all over the world shared their stories. They talked about what it means to stand by their brother or sister.

Their stories show that siblings support each other in many ways:

  • Being an ally: Siblings protect and support each other. They make sure both of their voices are heard and respected.
  • Changing minds: Siblings speak up. They help their communities and their extended families understand and accept them.
  • Living life together: Support is also about having fun. Siblings share hobbies, go on trips, and spend time together. This makes life better for everyone.

Standing by my sibling means I hold the line for them, even when the world does not.

To show what this bond looks like, our members shared photos of themselves and their siblings.

These pictures highlight the everyday moments of sharing a life of inclusion.

Supporting my twin sister means spending as much time as possible with her… To live life happily, TOGETHER.
