It’s been just over a month since I became Executive Director of Inclusion International and what a whirlwind it has been.

I’ve had the privilege of meeting inspiring colleagues and changemakers from around the world, learning from our proud history, and exploring the role we must play in today’s challenging global context.

Together, our movement has achieved remarkable progress towards a fairer, more inclusive world for people with intellectual disabilities and their families.

Yet we face a moment where rights are under threat in many countries, and where solidarity itself is being tested.

That is why our upcoming World Congress in Sharjah, UAE on 15th to 17th September could not come at a better time.

After seven years apart, our global community will gather again to reconnect, to recharge, and to recommit.

For me, so early in my journey with Inclusion International, it is the perfect moment to meet so many colleagues in person. And I know this Congress will give us three things we all need for the work ahead:

  • Connection – Our relationships are our greatest strength. Coming together, building new friendships, and strengthening old ones will give us the energy and solidarity we need.
  • Creativity – Across the world, people are closing institutions, building inclusive education systems, and creating real opportunities for work and participation for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. Congress will be a space to share this creativity and spread it further – the invaluable and irreplaceable role and impact of a truly global network.
  • Commitment – As self-advocates, families, and allies, our movement is rooted in shared values and mutual support. In Sharjah, we will show each other – and the world – that nobody stands alone in this fight.

The World Congress will be a time of joy, inspiration, and determination.

I’m honoured to be part of this gathering and eager to learn from so many changemakers across our global network.

Even if you can’t join us in person, you can still stand with us.

Show your support, share your commitment to inclusion, and, if your organisation shares our values, join our community and be part of the change the world needs.
