This project is about promoting citizenship and political participation of people with intellectual disabilities in Cameroon.
This project is lead by Sightsavers, and Inclusion International providing support by sharing the knowledge of our network as a technical partner.
This project is funded by the government of Ireland.
Goals
As part of the project:
- People with intellectual disabilites will learn about their right to participate in politics and how to advocate for this right
- Caregiver will learn about how they can offer good support to people with intellectual disabilites in advocating for their right to political participation
- Key stakeholders will develop strategies to support the meaningful inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in politics and development work
Activities
- Mapping existing organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) and caregiver associations in Cameroon
- Training future self-advocate leaders about the right to political participation and good support
- Holding focus groups with people with intellectual disabilities and caregivers to learn about their experiences taking part in politics, led by self-advocate leaders
- Building capacity of key stakeholders to promote meaningful inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities
- Developing resources for people with intellectual disabilities about making decisions, taking part in elections and being part of development work
