Accessibility: What Needs to Change

Many people with intellectual disabilities face barriers that prevent them from fully participating in their communities. Physical spaces, information, and services are often inaccessible, making it harder to live independently and be included in society.

This handout explains:

  • The accessibility barriers people with intellectual disabilities face in daily life.
  • What inclusive environments look like.
  • What governments, service providers, and others can do to improve accessibility.

Self-advocates from around the world share their experiences and call for change. They demand environments that are designed for everyone, where information is easy to understand, services are inclusive, and people with intellectual disabilities can navigate the world without barriers.

This document was prepared for the Global Disability Summit 2025, with support from UNICEF and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
