Ageing and Intellectual Disabilities: What Needs to Change

People with intellectual disabilities are living longer lives, but many face uncertainty and barriers as they age. Without proper support, they risk isolation, poor health, and institutionalisation.

This handout explains:

  • The experiences and concerns of ageing people with intellectual disabilities
  • The major challenges they face: limited support services, financial insecurity, and healthcare discrimination
  • What older people with intellectual disabilities want for their futures
  • What governments and service providers can do to support ageing with dignity in the community

Self-advocates from South Africa, Hong Kong, Canada, and Spain share their personal experiences with ageing. They call for the right to remain in their homes, make their own decisions, and receive appropriate support to stay healthy and independent.

This document was prepared by self-advocates from the Inclusion International network for the Global Disability Summit 2025, with support from UNICEF and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
