Intersecting Discrimination: What Needs to Change

People with intellectual disabilities face discrimination not only because of their disability but also due to other aspects of their identity, such as gender, sexuality, or having multiple disabilities. This is called intersecting discrimination, and it creates even greater barriers to inclusion and equal rights.

This handout explains:

  • How intersecting discrimination affects people with intellectual disabilities.
  • The specific challenges faced by women, LGBTQ+ people, individuals with multiple disabilities, and young people.
  • What governments, service providers, and society can do to create a more inclusive world.

Self-advocates from around the world share their experiences, calling for respect, justice, and support to ensure that everyone can live with dignity and independence.

This document was prepared for the Global Disability Summit 2025 with support from UNICEF and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
