Social Protection: What Needs to Change
Many people with intellectual disabilities struggle to access the support they need to live independently. Social protection systems are often difficult to navigate, do not cover essential costs, or force people into institutions instead of supporting life in the community.
This handout explains:
- The barriers people with intellectual disabilities face in getting social protection.
- What good social protection systems look like.
- What governments, service providers, and others can do to improve access and support independent living.
Self-advocates from around the world share their experiences and call for change. They demand systems that are accessible, easy to navigate, and provide the right support for independent living.
