Technology: What Needs to Change

Technology can help people with intellectual disabilities be more included and independent in their communities. However, many face barriers when trying to use technology.

This handout explains:

  • How technology can support people with intellectual disabilities in daily life
  • The main barriers people face: high costs, poor internet access, and lack of support
  • What accessible technology looks like for people with intellectual disabilities
  • What governments, service providers, and others can do to make technology more accessible

Self-advocates from Ecuador, United Arab Emirates, Moldova, and the United States share their experiences with technology. They call for affordable technology, better internet access, and proper support to use digital tools effectively.

This document was prepared by self-advocates from the Inclusion International network for the Global Disability Summit 2025, with support from UNICEF and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
