Barriers to Inclusive Education in Latin America and the Caribbean
Report
Full Title: OUR OPINION MATTERS: Perspective of Boys, Girls and Adolescents on Discrimination and Barriers to Inclusive Education
OUR OPINION MATTERS is a report that shares what boys and girls with and without disabilities and their families say about barriers to inclusive education in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This research was done by Inclusion International with our members Asdown (Colombia), Sociedad Peruana de Síndrome Down (Peru), and Fundación Saraki (Paraguay) and with the UNICEF Latin America and Caribbean Regional Office.
The report talks about accessibility barriers, barriers to participation, barriers to staying in school, barriers to progression and learning, and barriers to welfare.
The report shares recommendations for how different actors can take action to remove these barriers. These include:
- Specific suggestions regarding the observed situation and recommended actions, from the perspective of boys, girls and adolescents with and without disabilities and their families for each one of the three countries (Colombia, Peru, and Paraguay)
- A set of general comments and recommendations that can be considered in the broader Latin American context
This study allows a look inside schools and classrooms through the eyes of those who participate and learn in them – boys, girls and adolescents with and without disability.
The report can be used to inform the design of programs and policies about inclusive education.
