What is global advocacy?

Global advocacy is our work with global organisations such as the United Nations.

The United Nations is an international organisation made up of governments from all over the world.

They work together to make the world a better place.

Why is global advocacy important?

The United Nations make big decisions that affect all of our lives in our countries.

For example, United Nations agreed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which protects our rights.

It is important that people with intellectual disabilities and their families are part of big conversations that impact our lives.

By making sure our voices are heard at the United Nations, we can help influence big changes that can make things better around the world.

How do we do global advocacy?

We represent the views and experiences of people with intellectual disabilities and their families in places where decisions on important issues are made.

At the global level, we make sure that the United Nations, UN Agencies, and other big international organisations know what people with intellectual disabilities and their families want and need.

At the country level, we work with our members to make sure that important issues that affect people with intellectual disabilities and their families are heard by decision makers like politicians and governments.

Self-advocates and families from our network work together to come up with the messages we share in our global advocacy, and then deliver these messages themselves in important places like at the United Nations.
