The Global Disability Inclusion Report is a new report about what life is like for people with disabilities.

The report was made for the Global Disability Summit, which is a big event that brings together governments and others in the disability space to make commitments to disability inclusion.

The Global Disability Inclusion Report will be launched at the Global Disability Summit.

There are recommendations in the report about things that governments can do better to include people with disabilities.

Recognizing that the main report was not accessible to everyone, Inclusion International worked on creating an easy to understand Executive Summary.

The goal make the content of the report accessible to people with intellectual disabilities.

How do we create Easy Read?

Inclusion International follows our Listen Include Respect Guidelines to create easy to understand materials.

I was part of a reference group of self-advocates who helped make the Executive Summary of the Global Disability Inclusion Report accessible.

Together, we worked to create an accessible and short version of the report, making sure that no important information was lost in the process.

First, we got support to read the original report.

Then, we talked about the most important  information that needed to be in the easier version. We gave recommendations for what the images should be to help explain different ideas.

We reviewed drafts and gave feedback to make sure it was clear and accessible to everyone.

How did we work together?

We worked together online through emails and Zoom meetings, with each meeting lasting 1-2 hours.

We had self-advocates from Africa, Europe, MENA, and the Americas who were part of this work.

We used plain language.

Our meetings covered:

  • Understanding the project and talking about key points
  • Reviewing the draft of the easy-to-understand executive summary
  • Agreeing and approving the summary
  • Planning how to share it with others

Why is having an easy to understand version of the Global Disability Inclusion Report important?

This work was important because it helped make a big report about disability inclusion easier to understand for everyone.

We made sure the report was clear and simple, so people with intellectual disabilities and others could understand it. That is why self-advocates led the process.

This work helped promote accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities.

This is a report that governments and other organisations will read, and self-advocates knowing what is in it will help us with our advocacy.

We thank the International Disability Alliance and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for the funding to do this important work.
