Asking for a Safe Trip to School – Advocacy Resource for Families
Guide
For many children with disabilities, barriers in their community mean they cannot get to school.
This is especially true in emergency situations, when armed conflict, climate disasters, or broken infrastructure make it even harder for children with disabilities to get to school.
Families and students with disabilities know better than anyone what makes going to school hard, but it can be hard to speak up and ask for their right to a safe journey to school.
This guide, “Your Voice Matters,” is a tool to help families advocate for access to education.
It gives families clear lists of what to ask for — like safe roads, accessible transport, and inclusive schools — and helps families create simple advocacy messages to demand their child’s rights.
The guide was designed based on the experiences children with disabilities living in emergency situations in Colombia and Niger, but the guide can be used to help advocate for a safe journey to school anywhere in the world.
This guide for families is a companion resource to Removing Barriers to Inclusive Education in Emergencies: Accessibility Toolkit for OPDs and Humanitarian Organisations Working in Partnership.
