Children with disabilities face significant barriers to accessing inclusive education in emergency contexts.

These resource helps organisations working on education in emergencies (EiE) to identify what those barriers are, and make a plan for how to remove them.

The Toolkit

This toolkit looks at accessibility barriers that prevent children with disabilities from accessing education in emergencies.

The toolkit helps users to understand barriers to access, physical barriers, institutional barriers, and attitudinal barriers that impact children with disabilites on the way to school and at the school

The tools are broken down into two sections – barriers on the trip to school, and barriers at the school.

Each section includes:

  • An audit tool to help organisations identify barriers
  • An action planning tool to help organisations build a plan to remove barriers

Audience

This tool is intended for anyone who works on EiE.

This could be humanitarian organisations, organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), schools, and even families.

The audit and action planning tools are most effective when used in partnership between humanitarian actors and OPDs, who can benefit from each other’s knowledge and experiences when completing the audit or planning for the removal of barriers

This toolkit is available in English, French, and Spanish.
